A contraceptive is a drug or device which helps in avoiding pregnancy by effecting the process of ovulation and fertilization. It lets you choose when you want to have a baby. There are a number of Contraceptive options available in the market. You might have to try a few of them before coming across a method that suits you the best.  It’s advisable that you consult your doctor in choosing an appropriate method.

There are two basic kinds of contraceptives, namely barrier and non barrier contraceptives. Barrier contraceptives like condoms can protect you from Sexually transmitted diseases and infections however non barrier contraceptives like oral drugs cannot help you in preventing the sexual diseases.

Male condoms are the most easily available contraceptives. They prevent the sperm from entering the woman’s body. Latex or polyurethane condoms can even help you avoid sexually transmitted diseases .They can be obtained at pharmacies, drug stores and online.

Female condoms also prevent the sperm from entering the woman’s bodies and like male condoms can be found at pharmacies and online.

Besides male and female condoms, other barrier methods include Diaphragms, Cervical caps, Contraceptive sponges and Spermicides.

There are certain hormonal methods which manage and even stop ovulation and thus help avoid pregnancy. Hormones can be taken in many ways like in the form of pills, patches, injections and emergency contraceptive pills. Hormonal methods for birth control can be prescribed and administered by your doctor.

There are certain intrauterine methods which help prevent pregnancy. Like, an IUD is a device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. An IUD can be functional for many years at a time. When the woman does not require it anymore, a doctor can remove the device.

An other effective way for birth control is Sterilization. It either stops a woman from getting pregnant  or a man from releasing sperm. This is a non reversible process. The methods are sterilization implant, tubal ligation and vasectomy.

A person may have to try a few birth control measures before choosing the one that suits his needs the best and its advisable to talk to the doctor before going forward with any measure.
