Is your plastic bottle poisoning your water?

Is your plastic bottle poisoning your water?

Plastic bottles, containers and water storage tanks are commonly used for the storage of drinking water. These plastic water containers are generally preferred as they cost less, are made of stronger material, are light-weight and easy to maneuver than many other alternatives.

The plastic bottles available in the market today are mostly manufactured from Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), Bisphenol (BPA), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and cross-linked Polyethylene (PEX), or Thermoplastic Polymer, which have very well-known health risks. These chemicals start mixing with water when used for a long time and when these are washed with detergents. Leaching also happens when these are exposed to UV rays and high temperature. When these plastic containers are exposed to strong heat, especially during summer, the chemicals start to melt down and mix with water.

Commercial water bottles tend to wear down from repeated use, which can lead to bacterial growth in surface cracks inside the bottle. And if the bottles aren’t washed properly with mild soap and warm water, the health risk grows even more. But even with good washing, bacteria may still tamper with the drinking water.
