India ranks only second to China in air pollution related deaths

Air pollution is increasingly being considered a major environmental and ecological threat. Air pollution is a silent killer in India and has taken more than 600000 lives in 2012. India has the ignominy of being only second to China in pollution-related deaths. Of the most polluted cities in the world, four are in India: Delhi, Patna, Gwalior, and Raipur.

Recent reports indicate that while the metropolitan cities are chiefly affected, the tier 2 and 3 cities are not far behind. The WHO has admitted that 90% of the world’s population lives in conditions that are harmful for health. Cities like Delhi and Shanghai has a thick curtain of smog that necessitates one to either stay indoors or move wearing protective masks. There is a rise in cardiovascular cases and strokes all of which is being attributed to the increase in pollution. Pollutants are chiefly of the particulate matter and metal toxins kind. The primary culprits responsible for the increase in  pollutants are underlined below.

  1. Diesel vehicles
  2. Bio fuels
  3. Carbon fuels
  4. Car exhaust
  5. Aerosol sprays
  6. Power stations
  7. Industrial exhausts

It is not just outdoor pollution that is having an impact on human health, indoor air pollution arising because of con because of the lack of ventilation and use of bio fuels for cooking plays a key role in causing deteriorating human health. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified six pollutants that are detrimental for human health. These are:

  1. Ozone
  2. Carbon monoxide
  3. M. 2.5 and P.M. 10
  4. Sulfur dioxide
  5. Lead
  6. Nitrogen oxide

Air pollution is major global threat, however timely effort involving the public and the government can prevent this from becoming a global disaster. As citizens, a conscientious approach is required for mitigating this.
