Air pollution is detrimental for brain health

Living in the metropolitan city could severely impact your brain health.  For not only are you subject to daily stresses but there is the added problem of having to combat the ills of air pollution. It was initially thought that air pollution severely impacts one’s cardiovascular health and increases the risks of heart attacks and strokes. It is without doubt is responsible for the increase in chronic respiratory illnesses.  But a recent study has indicated that apart from cardiovascular health, air pollutants could also be responsible for mental issues in particular the ones of a degenerative nature.

The study revealed that subjects living in densely polluted areas have dangerous amounts of toxic particles in their brain tissues. Chiefly, magnetite a derivative of iron oxide was found in the brain tissues, but there were substantial amounts of other metals such as cobalt, platinum and nickel as well in the brain tissue. All of which play a critical role in unhinging the blood-brain barrier which is considered to be absolutely essential for mental well being.

While scientists are still working on how the presence of magnetite in the brain could speed up the spread of Alzheimer’s, children growing up in less polluted areas undoubtedly have better chances of healthy growth. There are millions of children growing up in polluted cities who are subject to the detrimental effect that pollution has on brain health. The primary ones being brain volumetric changes, Alzheimer, Parkinson and  olfactory, auditory, and cognitive deficits.

Studies have shown that children living in places that are less polluted have higher IQs than those living in densely polluted cities. Also, runner’s taking a jog in rural areas are more likely to reap the cognitive benefits of an early morning run as compared to an urban jogger. There is a significant improvement in BDNF, a factor playing a role in cognitive well being in the former but absent in the latter.
